ASPICE certification is one of the most common requirements OEMs place on suppliers that develop automotive software and electronic systems. Automotive SPICE (ASPICE) measures how mature your development processes are, and the result can decide whether you qualify for new programmes or keep your place in existing ones. At Ariol Automotive, we help Tier 1 suppliers, Tier 2 suppliers and engineering service providers prepare for their ASPICE assessment and reach the capability level their customers expect.
What Is ASPICE Certification?
Automotive SPICE is a process assessment model for software and systems development in the automotive industry. It is based on the ISO/IEC 33000 series and published by the VDA QMC, and OEMs use it as a common language to judge whether a supplier’s development processes are fit for complex electronic systems.
Strictly speaking, ASPICE is not a certificate you hang on the wall. It is an assessment: the processes and projects in scope are reviewed and each process receives a capability level. In practice, companies and customers call the outcome “ASPICE certification”, and it is the result OEMs ask for when they select and monitor suppliers.
The current version of the model is Automotive SPICE 4.0, which also covers hardware engineering, machine learning and validation processes alongside the system and software engineering processes.
ASPICE Capability Levels Explained
Every process assessed receives a capability level from 0 to 5:
- Level 0, Incomplete: the process is not implemented or does not achieve its purpose.
- Level 1, Performed: the process achieves its purpose, but without consistent control.
- Level 2, Managed: the work is planned, monitored and adjusted, and work products are controlled.
- Level 3, Established: the process follows a standard process defined at organisational level and applied across projects.
- Level 4, Predictable: the process is measured and controlled quantitatively.
- Level 5, Innovating: the process is continuously improved based on quantitative data.
In most supplier programmes the requirement is Level 2 or Level 3, depending on the OEM, the project and the criticality of the system. Read our supplier guide to ASPICE CL2 and CL3 for the practical differences.
What Does an ASPICE Assessment Evaluate?
An ASPICE assessment examines the processes used to develop software and systems, from requirements and architecture to design, integration and testing, together with the management and support processes that keep development under control, such as project management, quality assurance, configuration management and change management.
The assessment checks whether those processes are defined, followed, measured and continuously improved across projects and teams. It does not evaluate product quality directly. It looks at the discipline, traceability and control behind the product, on the premise that mature processes are the most reliable foundation for safe and dependable automotive systems.
Why Does Your Company Need ASPICE Certification?
For many OEMs, an ASPICE result is not a recommendation but a contractual requirement. Before awarding development contracts for software-intensive systems, vehicle manufacturers evaluate their suppliers against ASPICE. Organisations that cannot show adequate process maturity can be excluded, regardless of their technical expertise.
The pressure is growing. Vehicle electronics are more complex, regulatory and safety expectations keep rising, and OEMs demand more process rigour from their supply base. An ASPICE result is one of the most visible and standardised signals a customer can use to judge a supplier’s readiness for a complex programme.
It also shapes the commercial relationship. Suppliers with strong results usually gain more autonomy, faster approvals and a better position in future sourcing decisions. Persistent gaps bring more oversight, corrective actions and reputational risk.
Who Does ASPICE Apply To?
ASPICE is relevant to any organisation that develops software or electronic systems within the automotive supply chain, including:
Tier 1 suppliers delivering integrated systems or ECUs to vehicle manufacturers.
Tier 2 suppliers providing software components, modules or development services to higher-level systems.
Engineering service providers working on development for OEMs or Tier 1 customers.
It is especially critical for embedded software, system architectures and test and validation environments for safety-relevant vehicle functions. If a customer has asked you for an ASPICE assessment, or you are pursuing OEM or Tier 1 business with process maturity requirements, ASPICE directly affects your competitive position.
How Ariol Automotive Supports Your ASPICE Certification
We work from where you are to the capability level your customer requires:
Gap analysis: we compare your current processes with the ASPICE requirements for your target level and identify the gaps.
Improvement plan: we define priorities, owners and a realistic timeline.
Process definition and implementation: we help you define, document and deploy the processes in your teams and projects.
Pre-assessment: we review your readiness before the customer assessment so there are no surprises.
Assessment support: we help you prepare the evidence and follow up on findings afterwards.
Benefits of Implementing ASPICE in Your Organisation
- Qualification for OEM and Tier 1 programmes: meeting the expected capability level removes a critical barrier to new business.
- Predictability and delivery performance: greater control over timelines, costs and quality reduces delays, rework and customer escalations.
- Stronger supplier positioning: a good ASPICE result is an independently verified signal of capability that builds trust and differentiates you in sourcing decisions.
- Foundation for other standards: ASPICE process discipline makes it easier to align with ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO/SAE 21434 and ISO 24089, reducing the total effort of managing several frameworks at once.
